About
BioBase is the premier cloud solution for the automated processing, mapping and storing of spatial aquatic data.
Through our sophisticated cloud architecture, intimate knowledge of Lowrance® and Simrad® consumer sonar, satellite imagery processing, and our ability to rapidly process big data, we are the industry leader in processing technology for the aquatic resource professional.
We take sonar logs from echosounders, and create emergent vegetation and coastal habitat maps, removing the labor intensive and high-cost elements from the process. This allows you to acquire high quality data very quickly and focus your energies on aquatic resource management.

Who is BioBase
Ray Valley, President
With an academic background and early career focused on Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, Ray spent over a decade working with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. In 2011, Ray joined forces with others to develop BioBase—a platform aimed at providing accessible, powerful datasets for aquatic researchers and practitioners through affordable consumer sonar devices and automated cloud processing. The mission of BioBase has remained steadfast, and Ray now has the privilege of leading a skilled, close-knit team committed to maintaining BioBase's strengths while exploring new directions with new devices and data layers. When he's not fiddling with depth finders in the office, Ray is fiddling with them on his boat trying to figure out how to catch the fish he now so clearly sees but are clearly not interested in his bait!
Ryan Sullivan, Business Development and Marketing Manager
Ryan has dedicated his entire career to the aquatic management industry, motivated by a passion for environmental science and practical solutions. After earning a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science with a minor in Geology from the University of South Florida, he spent over 10 years managing a lake management company. Later, he transitioned to the public sector, where he was introduced to BioBase. In his role with BioBase, Ryan combines his love for creating maps and working with data to support aquatic habitat management—an ideal fit for his skills and interests. Along the way, he also earned a Master of Business Administration, which has strengthened his approach to business development and strategy. Outside of work, Ryan enjoys fishing, traveling, coaching his sons' soccer and baseball teams, and trying new foods.
Ian McCormack, GIS and Technical Support Lead
Ian graduated from the University of Minnesota with a Bachelor of Science in Geography. Since 2013 he has worked at BioBase Maps where he creates custom maps and GIS projects, provides customer support, and ensures the data quality of all sonar log uploads. Based in Minneapolis, Ian lives with his wife and two children. In his free time, he enjoys playing hockey, strumming his guitar, bird hunting, and, of course, exploring maps.
Corey Birkholz, Senior Web Developer
Corey came to BioBase as a consultant and happily stayed on full time. His extensive background of full stack development has come in handy, yielding features and improvements throughout the system. In addition to the technical work, he enjoys the team dynamic, culture and cohesiveness here with us. In his spare time, he enjoys his faith, going to the gym, bicycling, motorcycling, snowmobiling, reading, random trips, spending time with friends and family, music, and a medley of other activities -we’re never quite sure what he’s up to! While most of us enjoy the lakes in the summer, he relishes them in the winter as he is an avid winter sports enthusiast.
Pattrick Clifford, Lead Senior Web Developer
Patrick started his BioBase journey as a Quality Control and GIS Specialist Contractor after completing his B.S. in Environmental Sciences at the University of Minnesota. After a couple of years providing feedback and custom maps to the BioBase community, he jumped at the chance to transition into software development and has excelled. He now helps the team build features and enhancements that streamline data processing and content delivery. When Patrick isn't looking at code, he spends time hiking, biking, and looking for frisbees he inadvertently threw into the woods while trying to play disc golf.
Brian Ewoldt, Director of Operations
Brian has been involved in software development since the late 90s, starting his career in the gaming industry. He then moved to an online training company before joining the BioBase team in 2017. After a brief departure in 2019, Brian rejoined the company in 2021. As a project manager and director, Brian finds great satisfaction in the process of designing, creating, and seeing a final product take shape through the team’s efforts. His goal has always been to work on projects that enhance users' lives, and he remains open to new challenges that push boundaries. Outside of work, you’ll likely find Brian at the go-kart track, on a racing simulator, camping or riding his road bike.
